These teams serve as our main competition throughout the season, as well as u number of elite tournaments in Ontario and the US.
Located in Utopia (Essa), Ontario, HTI is located in a beautiful rural setting, although just 7 minutes outside the city of Barrie (population 150,000, on the shores of Lake Simcoe). The 25 acre campus provides an all-inclusive environment, where the night sky is an incredible view and we have the luxury of hosting bonfires and countless outdoor activities throughout the year. It is a very safe and friendly area with plenty of opportunities to go hiking, swimming, and biking. The students have easy access to all the amenities the city of Barrie has to offer, including grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, restaurants, golf courses, hotels, movie theaters, and shopping centers. We are also just a 45 minute drive from the Metropolitan area of the city of Toronto, so there is always an opportunity to visit the big city.
There is endless hockey to watch! Toronto is home to a women’s professional hockey team – the newly founded Toronto Six, a member of the NWHL. The Barrie Colts OHL Hockey Club plays at the Barrie Molson Center as their home arena. And of course, the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs can be viewed at the Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto”
LIFE ON CAMPUS
HTI players live as a tight family among their peers from around the world. In a busy schedule of school, training and hockey games, there is also some time to relax. The residential facility features a games room with video games, ping-pong table and foosball table, and a TV lounge. There is Wi-Fi throughout the facility, so students can spend time online talking with family and friends, or browse the net in the comfort of their own rooms. Our weight room is also open 24/7 for players to take advantage of in their free time. When the cold inevitably comes around, HTI’s “Outdoor Hockey Rink” will be built and flooded for some good old-fashioned Pond Hockey.
OFF-CAMPUS EVENTS AND TRIPS
There are many off-campus activities we do as a group during the season. Team trips to Canada’s Wonderland, Hockey Hall of Fame, Wasaga Beach, Niagara Falls, etc. are all part of the program.
HTI staff members are also available and do their best to accommodate the players with providing transportation in the evenings and on the weekends to get out and go shopping, to the movies, or just to grab a bite in town. We are only a short drive away from Walmart, Georgian Mall, Vaughan Mills Shopping Center, Cineplex Movie Theater, and numerous restaurants.
Visiting parents are welcome to pick up their daughter for the weekend, as long as our staff is notified ahead of time. The player must be back at the academy on time for curfew by Sunday night.
Nutritious meals are essential for elite athletes in training and competition. Our cafeteria is located within the residential facility, where a staff of professional cooks under our chef’s supervision prepare a variety of quality meals. Students receive three meals plus snacks daily. Players are educated about the value of a nutritious diet and our kitchen staff communicate with us daily about dietary needs and preferences. Students with special health and dietary needs are accommodated.Nutritional Advice
We hire the services of a professional nutritionist to help our staff and our players better understand what diet an athlete should follow for him/her to perform at the top of their ability.
